Fyodor Lukyanov: "Working with public opinion abroad should start with engaging our own society"

On 11 February, the first meeting of the Public Council under Rossotrudnichestvo took place. This is a permanent advisory body that includes representatives of both educational and scientific structures, as well as media and business communities.

At the moment the Agency is going through a reorganization, so the Council is presented with new tasks - to assist in the promotion of the Russian language, Russian education and culture abroad and to work with public opinion.

Fyodor Lukyanov is a journalist and internationalist, political analyst, and editor-in-chief of the journal "Russia in Global Affairs," is now a member of the Public Council.

"The idea of the Public Council is not new. Many agencies have similar structures, but in this case, the council is central to the agency's success. International cooperation and the tasks that the Agency faces involve working with public opinion in other countries, but we need to start by involving our own society in the process.

I hope that the Council will not turn into a formal biannual meeting to approve pre-prepared paperwork, as is often is the case in other institutions. Yevgeny Primakov's mindset is quite different. There are many things that need to be done and for which there is a need on "the other side", and the Public Council will be able to assist in just that. I think it is very important that there is a platform for discussion and exchange of experience.
