18 year old Andrey Esipenko from Russia achieves a rare victory over the World champion Carlsen

Andrey Esipenko, 18, of Russia, defeated Magnus Carlsen of Norway at a major tournament in Wijk aan Zee in the Netherlands.

Carlsen rarely loses in classical chess, most recently in October 2020, losing to Pole Jan Krzysztof Duda.

Esipenko is in the pursuit group along with American Fabiano Caruana and two Dutchmen, Anish Giri and Jorden van Forest. They have five points each. Next in the table is Sweden's Nils Grandelius (4.5 points), Carlsen and Harikrishna (4 each). There are five more rounds to go in the tournament.
