VII international conference Russian Heritage in the Modern World took place in London

The 7th international conference “Russian Heritage in the Modern World. Heroes. Devotees. Creators” organized by the Russian Heritage in the UK society took place at the representative office of Rossotrudnichestvo in London. The conference was attended by scientists, journalists, film directors, folklorists, and historians from the UK, Russia, Belarus, Ireland, Poland, the USA, Ukraine, France and Estonia.

The Deputy Mayor of the Borough of Bromley, Kira Gabbert, whose mother is from Odessa, greeted the guests and participants of the conference. Director of the Vladimir Vysotsky Museum Nikita Vladimirovich Vysotsky also addressed the audience with a greeting speech. Dr. Firuza Melville presented a project dedicated to the 225th anniversary of Alexander Griboedov. Dr. Alexander Karpeev spoke about the life and music of composer Nikolai Medtner and played several of the composer’s pieces. The evening was also attended by friends of the poet Vladimir Vysotsky - composer Anatoly Balchev and sculptor Mikhail Shemyakin, who created the monument to Peter the Great located in Deptfort, UK.

The representative of Rossotrudnichestvo in the UK Anton Chesnokov launched the scientific part of the conference. Konstantin Shlykov reminded the guests of the conference about the interactive "Map of Russian Places", which presents a unique collection of places of Russian presence in the UK and Northern Ireland. Natalia Masolikova delivered a presentation about female Russian scientists of the ‘first wave’ of Russian immigration. Svetlana Egorova-Johnston, one of the initiators and drivers behind the erection of a monument to the legendary British nurse Kate Marsden, spoke about Kate's journey to the outcasts and lepers in the Yakutsk region in 1891.

The conference was supported by the Russian Embassy and the representative office of Rossotrudnichestvo in the UK and moderated by the director of the Russian Heritage in the United Kingdom Society Yulia Plyaukshta.
