An exhibition dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography (aka VGIK) has opened in the library of the School of Slavic and East European Studies of University College London (UCL), with support of Rossotrudnichestvo
The exhibition includes items from the UCL SSEES library collection, books and audiovisual materials about VGIK, its founders, outstanding film directors, lecturers and graduates. Guests of the exhibition learned about such masters as Lev Kuleshov, Marlene Hutsiev, Alexey Batalov, Sergey Eisenstein, Mikhail Romm, Alexander Dovzhenko, Vsevolod Pudovkin. The visitors also learned about famous graduates of VGIK, such as Sergey Bondarchuk, Elem Klimov, Kira Muratova, Sergey Paradzhanov, Alexander Sokurov and Andrey Tarkovsky. Film shots, photographs and copies of the original documents were provided by VGIK.
Library employee Dr. Vladimir A. Smith-Mesa curated the exhibition. The opening ceremony was attended by British specialists in Russian cinema and culture. The exhibition marks the beginning of interactions between UCL and VGIK.
