Russian-British musical dialogue helps strengthen international relations

International Scientific and Practical Conference Russian-British Cultural Dialogue: Russian Music in Great Britain - British Music in Russia was held on October 10-11 at the State Institute of Art Studies (Moscow, Russia) and on November 6-7 at the University of Central Lancashire (Preston, United Kingdom). The conference was dedicated to the UK-Russia Year of Music and aimed to reveal new facets in the interaction of musical cultures of the two countries, to unveil previously unknown facts and materials from the history of Russian-British cultural dialogue, and to re-evaluate its results.

At the opening of the conference in Moscow participants and guests heard a welcome speech from the head of Rossotrudnichestvo Eleonora Mitrofanova. In Preston, audience was greeted by the Cultural Advisor of the British Embassy in Moscow and Prince Nikita Dmitrievich Lobanov-Rostovsky who represented the Russian Heritage in the UK Committee. As part of the plenary meetings, the chief conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra Vladimir Jurovsky spoke about the musical relations between Russia and the UK. Jane Hanson, founder and director of the One Day One Choir, chairman of the Board of Trustees of the London Philharmonic Choir (1996-1999), BBC radio host, shared her memories of collaboration with Evgeniy Svetlanov.

The following topics were discussed during the conference meetings: historical evidence of Russian-British cultural interaction; artistic styles, music, literature and other arts: parallels and intersections; creative heritage of musicians of the two countries and its prominence in modern cultural life; English musicians in Russia; Russian musicians in England. The participants showed particular interest in studying cultural heritage of both countries in terms of their cultural and spiritual dialogue; creative interconnections and mutual influences of Russian and British music.
