International festival of Russian poetry "Pushkin in Britain" concluded in London

International festival of Russian poetry and culture "Pushkin in Britain", which was timed to coincide with the 220th jubilee of Alexander Pushkin, ended in London on Saturday. Poet Tatyana Yufit from the UK became the ultimate winner of the tournament.

The tournament of Russian poets abroad traditionally became the key event of the festival. This year it was held in the church of St. Giles-in-the-Fields, located in the historic district of London’s Covent Garden. The competition of 10 poets was centered around creative understanding of Alexander Pushkin's line "With the wondrous hero of the Albion ..." from his lyceum impromptu poem "The Prince of Orange".

The festival was launched at the representative office of Rossotrudnichestvo in London. A poetry-jam and "Poet to Poet" concert introduced the participants and became the starting point in the literary contest. The festival also featured a panel discussion “Do we know the classics? Text analysis as a way of understanding a work of art (Griboedov, Ostrovsky, Lermontov)” lead by a jury member Andrei Galamaga. He is a member of the Writers' Union of Russia, author of five books of poems, plays, screenplays, lyrics for performances and films, winner of various international festivals. Oleg Borushko presented a study “Lermontov’s artistic mistakes in his story “Bella”. Round tables, master classes, translation tournaments and poetry readings aslo took place in the framework of the event.

After Yufit was recognized as the winner of the competition, she received the festival’s main award - a bronze Pushkin statuette made by sculptor Klim Stepanov from Odessa.

“Pushkin in Britain” festival has been held in London since 2003. According to its founder Oleg Borushko, a question about the festival was even included in the examination program for graduates of British secondary schools.

The festival of Russian poetry was organized with support of Rossotrudnichestvo Federal Agency and the Russian Embassy in the United Kingdom.
