A meeting in honor of the Soviet War Memorial Trust (SWMT) was held in London. The organisation was established as a charity in May 2018 and became the successor of the Soviet Memorial Trust Fund, which was engaged in organising annual commemorative ceremonies dedicated to the Holocaust Memorial Day, the Victory Day and the Memorial Sunday for 20 years. The Soviet War Memorial is dedicated to Soviet citizens killed in World War II. It is the only monument of its kind in the United Kingdom.
Russian Ambassador Alexander Yakovenko noted the special place of memorial work in the activities of the Russian Foreign Ministry and thanked all the members of the Soviet Memorial Trust Fund for their hard work and dedication.
The meeting as attended by the mayor of Southwark Council Catherine Rose, Member of the Privy Council of the United Kingdom, British Admiral Lord Alan West, British veterans, representatives of the embassies of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Director of the Imperial War Museum, representatives of the Russo-British Chamber of Commerce, and members of the Soviet War Memorial Trust: President Philip Matthews, Vice President Philip Wilkinson, Honorary Secretary Ralph Gibbson, Honorary Treasurer Jonathan Holloway, Members of the Board of Trustees Council Anton Chesnokov, Jean Turner and William Skelly.
For the first time in 20 years, the organisation’s information resource was created and presented. The website makes it possible to learn about the history of the memorial, the events held there and provides an opportunity to support the memorial through donations.
