The representative office of Rossotrudnichestvo in London hosted a seminar on bilingualism and multilingualism organized by “Znaniye” education center. Leading experts in the field of preparation of special educational programmes and practical workshops for bilinguals were invited to participate in the discussion. The Ambassador of Russia to the UK Alexander Yakovenko and the representative of Rossotrudnichestvo Anton Chesnokov launched the event with welcoming speeches.
In the course of the event, senior lecturer at the School of Psychology of the University of East London Dr. Virginia L. Lam presented the results of scientific research in the field of education of bilingual children. Senior lecturer in the Russian language of St. Andrew's University Dr. Emily Finer emphasized the importance of multilingualism in the modern world and the forms of its manifestation.
Participants of the seminar agreed that bilingualism and multilingualism would soon become the norm, not the exception, as knowledge of several languages is a significant advantage in the modern world. At the same time, it was noted that it is important to preserve all languages, including the languages of small peoples that are at risk of natural disappearance in the context of globalization.
Presentations were also delivered by Alex Oma, the head and art director of the Iroko theater, who elaborated on the importance of motivation and influence of the environment on the study of foreign languages. The head of the Russian language department at the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia Dr. Marina Kunovski spoke about unique methods of preparing Russian language tests. Anna Sergeeva, a graduate of the Higher School of Economics and St. Andrews University, spoke about her vision of the topic and the importance of the cultural component in the study of languages.
Dr. Francesco Goglia from the University of Exeter became the moderator of the seminar.
