This year Rossotrudnichestvo celebrates its 90th anniversary. The organization started off as All-Union Society for Cultural Relations in 1925, continued from 1958 as Union of Soviet Friendship Societies and Cultural Ties with Foreign Countries, as RusInterCentre in 1994 and in 2008 became a Federal Agency for CIS Affairs, Compatriots Living Abroad and International Humanitarian Cooperation (Rossotrudnichestvo).

Meeting of the Russian Literature and Language Society


Vladimir Putin took part in the plenary session of the Russian Literature and Language Society’s Congress.

The Russian Literature and Language Society was established in 2016 to consolidate the efforts of scholars, teachers, cultural figures and the global public to preserve the leading role of Russian language and literature in educating young people, strengthening the common cultural and education space, and developing the best traditions of Russia’s liberal arts education, and cultural and educational activity. On May 26 the representative office of Rossotrudnichestvo hosted a presentation of the book “Solovki” written by a prominent explorer of the archipelago Yuri Brodsky. The book is dedicated to broadening of understanding of history of the Solovetsky Monastery. The Head of Rossotrudnichestvo Lubov Glebova took part in the First Assembly of the Russian philology Association. She noted that "the work of the Russian philology Association will strengthen cultural and educational spheres not only in Russia, but also in the broader Russian world. It will preserve the best traditions of Russian education, which is in great demand abroad."

According to the head of the Agency, best specialists of Russian language living abroad should be involved in the activities of the Association. Russian word is the cultural code, the key to the history of the Russian people in its broadest sense. This is why it is so important that the young generation of Russians and Russian compatriots, regardless of where they live, know the Russian language and literature. Read more »

The lecture was dedicated to the anniversary of the outstanding jeweller Carl Faberge. It outlined major milestones in the formation of his jewellery company, expanded on the popularity of its products among collectors and monarchs of Russia and Europe, and also considered the impact of Faberge style on modern Russian jewellers – successors of the tradition, and those who resist it. The exhibition, organized by the World Art Foundation with support of Rossotrudnichestvo, presented the works of artists who create their pieces in a variety of modern styles and directions, from academic to abstract. Russian theatre “Xameleon” performs in London

Stage adaptation of Chekhov’s selected stories “Love in a Nutshell” performed by the first Russian theatre in London took place in the framework of the Russia-UK Year of Language and Literature. Supported by Rossotrudnichestvo, professional theatre “Xameleon” staged its first performance of Chekhov earlier this spring. The production received a great response, and additional performances were announced to be held in May due to popular demand. Read more »

“What? Where? When?” UK Championship held in London

9th national championship in “What? Where? When?” intellectual competition took place at the representative office of Rossotrudnichestvo on May 22. The tournament was attended by 12 teams from London, Edinburgh and Cambridge. The event was held for the ninth time and its popularity is growing from year to year.

President of the Russian branch of the International Advertising Association (IAA), Chairman of the editorial board of the publishing house "AST-Press", as well as the winner of the title of best club captain of "What? Where? When?" Boris Eremin addressed the audience with a greeting speech. The event finalized with the victory of the team "Owl found the tail" from London, which answered most of the questions. London Symphony Orchestra under direction of Valery Gergiev played Tchaikovsky in Trafalgar Square

London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) and renowned Russian conductor Valery Gergiev performed a special concert in London's Trafalgar Square on May 22.

This free event consisted of works composed by legendary Russian composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky. The program included the 1812 Overture (written to honor Russia's victory in the war against Napoleon), Symphony No 4 and a suite from his famous ballet Swan Lake.

Participants of LSO’s social program – 42 young musicians from the disadvantaged districts of East London, as well as 23 students of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, joined the performance of the suite side-by-side with orchestra members. Read more »

Awarding ceremony for the best drawings based on the works of Chingiz Aitmatov took place in London

On May 18, Aitmatov Academy and Collection Red gallery finalised the list of winners of the competition of illustrations based on the works of the prominent Soviet writer and Russian Ambassador to the Benelux countries in 1992-1994 Chingiz Aitmatov. The final stage of the competition as well as the exhibition of the best works took place at the representative office of Rossotrudnichestvo in London.

The majority of works received in the framework of the competition, which was held in London, presented illustrations to Aitmatov’s story "Jamila". Kyrgyz, Russian and German artists as well as a Kurdish writer from Turkey presented their vision of the famous works of the author. "Jamila" is considered his most popular story. Series of webinars organized by the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia continues at Rossotrudnichestvo

The representative office of Rossotrudnichestvo continues to host series of webinars dedicated to Russian language education organized by the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia (PFUR).

On May 17, teachers of supplementary schools of the UK attended lectures on the prepositional-case system in Russian language textbooks for children of compatriots living abroad. The seminar touched on grammatical difficulties faced by children and teachers while studying prepositional-case system of the Russian language.

Also, educational literature on literary-grammatical constructions for the teaching aids at primary school level were discussed in the framework of the event.

Lecture entitled "Soviet poetry. Yevtushenko. Vysotsky. Asadov. Simonov. Voznesensky" took place at the representative office of Rossotrudnichestvo in London in the framework of the regular meetings of the discussion club “Thinking Out Loud”.

The lecture introduced the attendees of the event to the life and work of the most prominent representatives of Russian poetry of 1940s-1980s, whose works are often perceived as ‘the mirror of the Soviet era’. From the period of the Great Patriotic War through the poetry of the sixties and up to the beginning of the 1980s - eternal verses of Konstantin Simonov, Eduard Asadov, Yevgeny Yevtushenko, Andrei Voznesensky, Mikhail Ancharov and Vladimir Vysotsky were recited in the course of the evening.
